Deputy Kenneth Baker's patrol car flipped several times and went down an embankment along Red Mountain Road near Hampton Road.
Officials Baker swerved to avoid a vehicle that crossed into his lane.
The driver of the other car, 40-year-old Leslie Roberts, of Bahama, was charged with driving left of center.
Baker was expected to be released from the hospital later Tuesday.
