ABC11 spoke to a UNC student from New Jersey whose family is dealing with the storm.
Johnny Gil and his girlfriend Danielle Magazzu were glued to news coverage of Hurricane Sandy.
"All the bridges are closed and pretty much no one can get, can go anywhere," said Gil.
Gil said his family lives about 30 minutes inland from the Jersey Shore near the likes of Seaside Heights and other areas getting pummeled by Sandy.
"Every store around where we live, there's nothing on the shelves," said Gil. "So, everyone's prepared with food, water, batteries, and flashlights. We haven't lost power yet, so what my family did was they cooked food for the next three days, just in case."
"It's just so unreal that this is happening, especially in New Jersey," said Magazzu.
Magazzu never planned to ride out a storm from the Triangle. Sandy's path extended her stay when the airline canceled her flight over the weekend.
"I rescheduled the flight until Wednesday and then they just canceled it," said Magazzu. "So, now I'm waiting for Wednesday and I might end up canceling that one as well now."
Danielle's family is a weathering the storm together. Her mom, Phyllis Magazzu, is busy as the mayor of West Berlin, N.J. She's overseeing the town's safety through one of its most fierce storm to date.
"I know that she is -- I'm sure -- is telling everybody what to do and to be prepared , what supplies they need," said Magazzu.
