More than 5,000 runners registered for the event, which started and ended near the N.C. State University's Bell Tower on Hillsborough Street.
Organizers said Friday's last- minute cancelation of the New York City Marathon created a sudden boost in registration for the City of Oaks Marathon. In an effort to accommodate some of the runners, organizers added more than 100 spots for the marathon field.
