The Chapel Hill License Plate Agency on W. Estes Drive was closed Wednesday following an internal review into its operations.
Officials said after referral to the License and Theft Bureau, investigators determined that inappropriate activities, including accounting irregularities, warranted closure of the office and the cancellation of its contract.
The Chapel Hill plate agency has been in operation since 1999 under contract to Caprina Kirkpatrick of High Point.
DMV said it will do a final inventory audit of the agency before removing equipment and supplies belonging to the state.
An investigation into the agency is ongoing at this time. Charges are pending, according to authorities.
