Emily Brewer, 36, wasn't even supposed to be at this bus stop Wednesday. However, her babysitter canceled. So, she decided to take her 2 year old son to the UNC-Chapel Hill campus with her.
"We're sitting here enjoying a beautiful day and a woman comes up to me and she's in distress and she's pointing to her friend who's inside the bus shelter," said Brewer.
As Brewer peered inside the shelter, she discovered a pregnant woman going into labor.
"I come in, and the mother is in a squat position, and she's holding open her pants, and it appears her water is breaking," said Brewer. "So, I immediately get on my phone and call 911."
Caller: "Hi, there's a woman who's going into labor right now at a bus shelter at the corner of Cameron and South Columbia."
Caller: "Oh my God, the baby was just born. The baby is here."
911: "She's had the baby?"
Caller: "She's had the baby. It's in her pants!"
Meanwhile, Emily's son, Dylan, was there witnessing the whole thing.
"A mama had a baby, right in her pants," said Dylan.
Luckily, Dylan stayed right by his mother's side while Brewer got instructions from the dispatcher on what to do.
911: "Do you have a shoe string or piece of string available so we can tie off the umbilical cord?"
Caller: "I can take one off this lady's shoe."
911: "If you can get one, tie it around the umbilical cord about six inches from the baby. Don't cut the umbilical cord."
Caller: "Don't cut it?"
911: "Don't cut it. Just tie it around the umbilical cord about six inches from the baby."
Shortly after that, paramedics arrived and took the mother and the newborn to the hospital, where both are said to be just fine.
Brewer and her son stopped by the hospital and got to visit them, and she even got to hold the little girl.
"It was so, so beautiful to see this small child that I saw come into the world," said Brewer.
The new mother was at least two weeks early, and hadn't even picked out a name yet. However, she said she is thinking of naming the little girl Emily after the woman who came to her rescue.
What makes the story even more amazing is that the mother spoke only Spanish and Brewer does not. Yet despite the language barrier, the two women were able to work together to safely deliver the baby.
