The accident happened around 6:15 a.m. on US 1 near Franklinton.
Troopers said the truck was traveling from Selma to Henderson when it ran off the road and overturned. The driver was airlifted to WakeMed, but was treated and released.
As a result of the crash, 3,000 gallons of gas spilled into a creek nearby, causing crews to clean up the mess for hours.
Residents in the community were forced to leave their homes while environmental crews worked on the clean up.
"We were called and told we needed to evacuate," neighbor Sharon Fleming said. "We walked out to the driveway and could see all the commotion."
No other vehicles were involved in the accident and no other injuries were reported.
The Highway Patrol said charges are pending against the driver of the truck driver.
