November peak month for deer collisions

RALEIGH, N.C.

Deer collisions are on the rise, up almost 8 percent in the last year across the country, according to insurance experts.

As for North Carolina, the state ranks in the top half for deer collisions.

State Farm told ABC11 more than 48,000 crashes in the state involved deer within the last year.

And it's not just while driving on country roads. Steven Gamble hit a deer while driving in North Raleigh on Wade Avenue Thursday night.

"I was seeing a figure in the road, and I was slowing down trying to see what it was, so my light could hit it. And next thing you know it was a deer, and it hit the right side of my car and it damaged the whole right side, and the passenger side of my car," Gamble said.

And Gamble's not alone. There have been at least five other crashes involving deer in Raleigh within the last week.

Experts are urging drivers to slow down when they see deer because seeing one could mean others aren't far behind.

Deer are also most active in the evening hours. Officials suggest not swerving to avoid a deer because drivers risk hitting other cars on the road.
