Authorities said a man reportedly struck two women in the 100 block of East Franklin Street near the intersection with Columbia Street around 2 a.m., then brandished a handgun and fired one shot.

No one was injured in the shooting. The suspect, described as a black man wearing a white coat with brown trim, fled the scene -- possibly in the direction of UNC's campus.

University officials placed the campus under alert shortly before 5 a.m. and notified faculty, staff and students about the possibility of danger, but said there was no immediate health or safety threat.

Meanwhile, Town of Chapel Hill police are asking anyone with information that may help to identify the suspect to call 911 or contact the Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC Crime Stoppers at (919) 942-7515. Calls are confidential and anonymous. You can also submit information to Crime Stoppers online at www.crimestoppers-chcunc.org.
