Officials told ABC11 that Terrible Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant operator Dan Hackney was replacing a piece of equipment underground around 9:15 a.m. when his leg got caught in the equipment. Workers alongside him were not injured and able to go for help.
Rescuers were able to free the 44 year old around 10:30 a.m. and take him to WakeMed Trauma Center.
Initial reports stated that Hackney's foot was severed in the accident, but officials said they are still awaiting word from the hospital on the extent of his injuries. He was last listed in good condition.
The state Division of Occupational Safety and Health has begun an investigation to try to figure out what happened and if the accident could have been prevented.
The water treatment plant is located in the 5800 block of Hilltop Road.
