Officials said the chase started after 2 a.m. on South Adams Street, when the driver of a Chrysler Crossfire attempted to avoid a DWI checkpoint.
The chase continued along Highway 98 and ended when the driver crashed into a box truck head-on around 2:30 a.m.
The truck's driver, 25-year-old Edouard Ducrest, of Rougemont, and a passenger inside escaped before the two vehicles burst into flames. The Highway Patrol said their injuries were not life-threatening.
The driver of the Chrysler died after being ejected from his vehicle by the force of the collision, according to officials.
A Highway Patrol spokesman said the agency has been in touch with the family of the man they believe was driving the Chrysler.
The patrol and the family are waiting on positive identification from the medical examiner's office since that driver was burned beyond recognition.
