Crews worked around the clock to repair a section of N.C. 24 between N.C. 53 and Dunn Road -- which is part of the detour route setup after a two year construction project on the bridge over the Cape Fear River started last Tuesday.
Authorities said the sinkhole was caused by an 18-inch underground pipe failure.
With part of N.C. 24 completely closed and construction work blocking traffic along U.S. Highway 301/Business I-95, drivers had a hard time getting into Fayetteville and were advised to use alternative routes.
