Driver pushing car critically injured

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.

Investigators had sent out a news release Thursday titled "fatality," but said Friday that 22-year-old Lavardis Whitman was actually at Cape Fear Medical Center in critical condition.

Police said Whitman was hurt while pushing a 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier with another man around 12:30 a.m. Thanksgiving morning in the area of Bragg Boulevard and Swain Street.

As the Cavalier entered Bragg Boulevard, it was hit by a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer driven by 23-year-old Jeremy Banaka.

Banaka, of the 100 block of Waterway Drive, Spring Lake, was charged with DWI.

The other man pushing the car - 30-year-old Terekus Rogers of Fayetteville - was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
