Raleigh police upgraded the charge against 23-year-old Daniel Williams, of Fuquay-Varina, to misdemeanor death by vehicle after one of the crash victims, 22-year-old Terrisha Beasley, of Burlington, died Thursday.
Williams turned himself in at the Wake County Detention Center.
Police said traffic was stopped on I-440 eastbound near Wade Avenue and Williams didn't slow down in time, which caused a chain reaction crash.
A total of six vehicles were involved.
