"I want to assure all families of the Wake County Public School System that safety and academic success are our top priorities for every student," Gainey wrote on the district website.
Gainey said there are security measures in place at each school that include regular drills and a law enforcement presence on campus.
He also said the Connecticut tragedy has prompted the district to review its emergency plans to see if improvements can be made.
Gainey said if children are worried about their safety, parents can use guidelines from the National Association of School Psychologists to help talk to their kids about what happened.
