Authorities: Woman brought heroin to courthouse

DURHAM

Authorities said 32-year-old Kelly Michelle Hawkins was attempting to enter the Durham County Courthouse at about 9 a.m. Monday when the deputy working door security observed what appeared to be a screwdriver and razor blade in Hawkins' purse as it passed through the x-ray machine.

The deputy searched Hawkins' purse to confirm what he had observed on the x-ray machine monitor and discovered Hawkins' purse also contained several small packages of heroin.

Hawkins has been charged with felony possession of heroin and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. She was also served with a warrant from Orange County for harassing phone calls.

Hawkins posted a bond of $4,500 and was released from the Durham County Jail Monday evening.
