Just after 3 p.m. Wednesday, local law enforcement reported a tornado located about 12 miles north of Beaufort.
The National Weather Service investigated damage left behind and confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down with winds estimated at 90 mph. It was around 100 yards wide and traveled about a quarter of a mile.
The tornado touched down around the intersection of Tuttles Grove Road and Madison Bay Drive, ending near N.C. Highway 101.
Several homes were without power following the storm.
