Robert Furey made his first appearance before a judge just one day after the teen he's accused of killing was laid to rest.
Last week, police said Furey was showing his neighbor, 15-year-old Nick Exley, a gun at his house when it went off, hitting and killing Exley.
"I'm going to greatly miss him," Exley's uncle Brad Exley told ABC11. "He was a rambunctious, wild young man, but very caring young guy at the same time."
Furey has been charged with voluntary manslaughter. He told the judge Thursday that his family has hired an attorney. The judge then set his court date to Jan. 10.
However, details surrounding the shooting still remain a mystery.
Exley's family did not want to comment Thursday, nor did Furey's attorney.
Furey's criminal background includes a couple of DWI charges, including one from 1988 and one from 2001.
