Three juveniles charged in Durham murder

DURHAM, N.C.

Investigators said the alleged victim - Johnny Danilo Villatoro, of South Woodcrest Street - was shot to death during a carjacking just before 7 p.m. in the 2900 block of Firth Street.

Justino Navarette Maya, 16, of 311 South LaSalle Street, a 14-year-old girl, and a 12-year-old girl are accused in the killing.

Detectives said the trio first encountered Villatoro on Avondale Drive Friday evening and asked him for a ride. He drove them to Firth Street where the carjacking and shooting occurred. Villatoro apparently did not know the three.

Police said the 12-year-old girl managed to shoot herself in the leg and stomach while in Villatoro's SUV. Officers found the injured juvenile around 7:30 p.m. on Channing Court. They also located Villatoro’s stolen SUV behind an apartment building on Channing Court.

The juvenile has been released from the hospital and will face a murder charge.

Maya and the 14-year-old are already charged with murder. Maya was in the Durham County Jail. The girl was taken to a juvenile facility.
