Several injured in Raleigh apartment fire

RALEIGH, N.C.

Officials said the fire broke out at the Mission Valley Apartments on Centennial Parkway just after 4 p.m. Fire crews said much of the damaged was contained to apartment 101, but did spread to others in the three-story building.

ABC11 has learned that either six people were transported to nearby hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. Officials said one of those injured is a Raleigh police officer who was one of the first on the scene and was overcome by smoke.

The Raleigh fire chief said because of the road conditions the response time was slower than usual, and the officer was trying to help residents out in the event that fire crews would take longer.

Fire crews determined that the fire was started after a resident was smoking in bed.

At least 27 people were displaced in the blaze and have gathered at the Burger King on Avent Ferry Road to be checked out by EMS crews.
