Officials said they got the call just after 10 a.m.
Pictures from Chopper 11 showed flames shooting through the roof of a two-story brick building in the complex west of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Firefighters were forced into a defensive posture by the severity of the blaze. They used ladders to scale the outside of the building to shoot water through windows.
The fire was extinguished at 10:56 a.m.
There were no human injuries, and one dog and two cats were believed to have perished in the fire. However, all were found safe after the fire.
In all, nine apartment units were damaged. At least two on the second-level were destroyed, while others suffered lesser flame, smoke, and water damage.
The Red Cross was helping residents displaced by the fire.
There was no immediate word on the cause of the blaze.
