The fire in the eastbound lanes near Six Forks Road only involved the truck.
Authorities said 54-year-old Charles Locklear, of South Carolina, was traveling from Michigan to Wilson when he saw flames shooting through his floor board.
Locklear believes his transmission exploded. He was able to get out safely.
The fire was brought under control by 5:15 p.m. but traffic backed up behind the incident.
Locklear worked for Barnes Transport in Wilson.
