Police investigate sexual assault reported at mall

FAYETTEVILLE

A police spokesman says the Special Victims Unit responded to a hospital in another county after the girl reported the assault.

Police say the 16 year old girl reported she was raped at the mall Monday around 7:30 p.m.  They say the girl was at the mall shopping with her parents when she was pulled into a bathroom an assaulted.

Police are not releasing a description of the girl's attacker.

The mall has a security force that includes Cumberland County deputies. However, a sheriff's department spokesperson said the mall cut the deputies back to a three day week, and that no deputies were on duty Monday evening.

Repeated calls from ABC11 to mall management were not returned Tuesday.

Officers are not saying if the girl knew her attacker, or it was a random attack.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fayetteville Police Department at (910) 433-1856 or Crimestoppers at (910) 483-TIPS (8477).
