The accident happened near Knightdale Boulevard.
An eyewitness told ABC11 the Ford Explorer hit a rubber tire and lost control before hitting the guard rail and being sent down the embankment. The embankment has a nearly 100 foot drop.
Officials have not said if anyone inside the SUV was hurt in the accident.
Crews shut down the right lane of US-64 for several hours while they pulled the SUV out.
