Sheriff Steve Bizzell said his deputies got a call reporting a murder/suicide at 1:41 p.m. Friday.

When they arrived at the home off Galilee Road, they found a dead man lying next to a car parked in the yard and another man lying near the back of the home with a weapon next to him.

The second man was still alive when deputies arrived, but he died on the way to Johnston Medical Center Smithfield.

He said it appeared the first victim was visiting the home when the homeowner shot him and then turned the gun on himself, but the investigation was just getting underway.

Neighbors and friends were in shock.

"He's a great person. We actually had a fishing trip planned next week," said friend Michael Sherman. "I don't understand what happened."

Sherman doesn't understand what happened to his friend and neither does his son, who was supposed to be in a play with one of the men who died.

"He just wanted to know what going to happen if Craig didn't make it," said Sherman.

"I'm just surprised that anything like that would happen because he's such a good person," said neighbor Louise Carter.

Bizzell said his department was not ready to release the names of the two men involved.
