People turned out to kick up their heels at the 31st annual festival, which kicked off Friday night.
The big attendance is music to the ears of festival organizers and merchants. It is estimated that the three day festival brings in more than $2.5 million.
Police have huge presence at this year's festival. They are making sure things don't get out of hand after known gang members were warned to stay away by authorities.
Many at the festival liked the stepped up patrols.
"I feel a lot better," said grandmother Patricia Lee. "We know everything is going to be alright."
Police said there was no major trouble during Friday's events.
The Dogwood Festival runs through Sunday evening.
