Last week's changes come less than a year after Hurricane Sandy scattered debris from decks and walkways for miles and collapsed at least eight pools in Duck.
The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va., reports that the new ordinance limits private boardwalks over the dunes to 4 feet in width. Pools, gazebos and other structures must be at least 30 feet landward of the first line of vegetation, which typically is at the foot of the dunes.
Wider boardwalks require larger pilings sunk up to 16 feet into the sand, which can destabilize dunes. Four-foot boardwalks require smaller pilings sunk only 5 feet.
