However, none are reeling more than the young man's family after he burned their home down, set fire to Saint Luke's Church, and then killed himself.
The whole thing started around 2:20 a.m. Saturday when Jason Martin set fire to the home he lived in with his parents in the 800 block of Carrington Drive in Raleigh.
Less than 20 minutes later at St. Luke's, police say Martin knocked over a statue of Christ, crashed through the front door, set fire to the sanctuary, and then shot himself in the parking lot.
The parish priest said Martin's father came to speak to him Monday.
"I talked with the young man's father and we prayed together and kind words on both sides," said Father Rob Staley. "We're deeply grieved at the loss of the young man's life and our community has been praying for him and for God's mercy upon him."
The investigation is ongoing.
