Officials said 59-year-old Glen Isaac Darden, of Clinton, was arrested Wednesday and was given $1,000 bond.
The alleged incident took place on Dec. 12. at Eastern Wayne High School. The student told the school resource officer the next day, which prompted the investigation.
The victim is a juvenile and officials will not release her identity.
Darden serves as an instructional assistant and the varsity boy's basketball coach at Eastern Wayne High School. He was placed on paid administrative leave Dec. 13. Following Wednesday's arrest, he was placed on unpaid administrative leave, according to officials.
Darden was hired by the school district in March 2003 and has coached basketball since then. This is his second year as head coach.
