The school board chairman confirmed to ABC11 that Gerri Martin resigned Monday night, which is just eight months into her tenure.
The decision to terminate her contract was unanimous.
School board members named former Wake County Superintendent Del Burns as interim superintendent. This is the second time he's filled that role in Orange County.
Burns resigned as Wake County's Schools superintendent in June 2010.
