CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- The widow of a Chapel Hill engineer killed two years ago in a bus crash is speaking out about that tragic day, exclusively to Eyewitness News.

Theresa Watson says the last words her husband Doval said to her were, "Do you have a seatbelt?"

When she said no, he traded seats with her.

The Watsons, along with a group of Triangle-area students, were on their way to Hampton University when their charter bus careened off the road in Virginia.

Doval Watson was killed, and Theresa suffered serious injuries.

A jury awarded Theresa and her family $18 million in civil damages earlier this week.

"You would think with the lawsuit we would just be really overjoyed," Theresa said. "But it's such an empty void. He's not here and money never replaces a life."

The family claims the bus driver, Larry Brock, lost control of the charter bus when he reached for his drink.

Brock was charged with reckless driving.
