RALEIGH (WTVD) -- One of the men accused of killing a Granville County couple during a multi-state crime spree committed suicide in prison Tuesday.
The North Carolina Department of Public Safety said 54-year-old Edward Campbell was found unresponsive in his cell at Central Prison around 2:20 p.m. after attempting to hang himself.
He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Edward Campbell and his son, Eric, are accused of killing 73-year-old Jerome Faulkner and 62-year-old wife, Dora. Authorities say Campbell set fire to the couple's home and stole their vehicle.
Campbell and his son then headed to West Virginia, where they are accused of involvement in a police shootout.
Eric Campbell is also being held in Central Prison.
Earlier this month, the district attorney announced that he would push for the death penalty against the Campbells.
