Gas leak shuts down US 1 in Apex
US 1 was shut down for about an hour after a car crashed and caused a natural gas leak.

APEX, North Carolina (WTVD) -- US 1 reopened Tuesday night after it was shut down in both directions at Highway 55 for about an hour after a gas leak.

The highway was closed after a crash caused a large gas leak. The incident happened at Marco Drive and Scheifflin Road.

Authorities said wind was pushing gas over US 1.

PSNC Energy said a car hit a piece of their infrastructure that manages pressure.

The gas company sent crews to the scene to contain the leak.

The Apex fire chief told ABC11 that the gas leak has been capped and evacuation orders have been canceled.

The incident lasted about an hour.

The gas company will be doing repairs throughout the night.

No customers sustained outages, PSNC said.
