Family, dog escape house fire near Clayton

CLAYTON (WTVD) -- A family of five and their dog safely escaped after a fire erupted Friday in the attic of their two-story home in Clayton.

It happened on Ryans Lane, just outside town limits, but in the Clayton Fire District.

The family dog also survived. Firefighters found him hiding behind the toilet in a first-floor bathroom.

Fire damage is seen in the attic.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the structure is still being evaluated. Meantime, the American Red Cross is assisting the family

Clayton, Garner, Archer Lodge and East Wake fire departments all responded, as did Johnston County EMS.
