Western Carolina University fishing team takes boats to help in Houston
SYLVA, NC (WTVD) -- The fishing team at Western Carolina University wants to do their part in helping with the relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
Close to 10 college students will be driving down four boats to the Houston area, WLOS reports.
"We really don't know what we're going into, we just know that people need help," one of the students said.
The fishing team saw requests from first responders working in the region. The students plan to meet with them and provide any assistance they may need.
"I know there are hundreds of thousands of people who are having their homes flooded out," another student said. "I just feel like we can help being there, even if we don't save but one person or even a couple dogs, it's still worth it."
They've packed life vests, first aid kits, tanks of gas, extra batteries, and chargers to take on the road. The students also plan to donate travel hygiene items, dry clothing, and small bibles.
Walmart donated cases of water bottles for the students to give to those in need.
The community quickly donated to a GoFundMe account set up by the team with the goal of raising $3,000 to help with travel expenses.
The students have already reached their goal, they say any extra money will be given to a reputable charity helping people in Texas.
The group plans to return by Monday.
