Duke Energy sets summertime power use record
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Duke Energy says customers in North and South Carolina set a record last week for summertime power use as temperatures hovered in the high 90s.
Peak usage hit 20,671 megawatt-hours July 27. The previous record was 20,628 megawatts-hours.
The all-time record still belongs to Old Man Winter: 21,101 megawatt-hours, set on Feb. 20, 2015.
Duke says it's keeping a close eye on the power grid to make sure there are no power interruptions despite the high demand.
"We have sufficient supplies of electricity to meet our customers' needs, and our technicians are working around the clock to ensure smooth operations at our power plants and along our power lines," said Nelson Peeler, Duke Energy vice president of system planning and operations.
