Police: Child apparently bit by shark in Surf City
Police in Surf City said an 8-year-old boy received minor leg and foot injuries from what appeared to be a small shark bite.

SURF CITY, N.C. -- Police in Surf City said an 8-year-old boy received minor leg and foot injuries from what appeared to be a small shark bite.

It happened Wednesday in the 700 South Shore Drive area about five blocks from a fishing pier. Town policy prohibits people from swimming or surfing within 300 feet of a fishing pier.

Police said the wounds were superficial and not considered serious, but EMS crews provided treatment at the scene.

The child's parents were taking him to have the bite cleaned and assessed at a local hospital.

Town Manager Larry Bergman says the town does not plan to warn visitors about the shark bite or tell swimmers to get out of the water, but it has increased police beach patrols.

Wednesday's incident comes 10 days after a 12-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy were attacked by sharks at Oak Island. Both had amputations.
