According to authorities, a preliminary investigation shows Sgt. J.D. Malzahn "discharged his duty weapon during the encounter" with an armed suspect during a domestic dispute call.

A second officer -- later identified as 31-year-old K.J. Barefoot -- "sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg," according to police.

Officer Barefoot was taken to WakeMed, where he was treated and released. No one else was injured.

Later Thursday, the Raleigh Police Department identified the suspect encountered by police as 27-year-old Joshua Daniel Timberlake. He's charged with one count of assault on a female related to the domestic dispute.

Police said the shooting remains under investigation and no charges have been filed in that part of the incident.
