OCRACOKE ISLAND, N.C. (WTVD) -- The North Carolina Department of Transportation has begun work on Ocracoke Island, rebuilding the dunes damaged by Hurricane Arthur.

Heavy equipment is being used to move sand along N.C. Highway 12.

"We expect this work to continue for about three more weeks, so if you're traveling N.C. 12 between Ocracoke Village and the north ferry terminal (the one to Hatteras), be prepared to stop for construction equipment," the DOT says on its Facebook page.

Last week the DOT began a beach nourishment project in Rodanthe, the area hardest hit by Hurricane Arthur.
