1 dead in Durham house fire on Wintergreen Place, officials say
DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- One person died in a house fire Wednesday morning in Durham, according to the Durham Fire Department.
Fire crews responded around 10 a.m. to a home in the 2100 block of Wintergreen Place.
Four people inside the home were able to escape before firefighters arrived, but fire crews got word that one person remained inside the home as smoke poured from the rear of the single-family structure.
Fire crews immediately began working to suppress the flames and search for the person inside. They eventually found the occupant, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
The identity of the victim has not been released.
A second occupant was evaluated by EMS on scene for smoke inhalation and given treatment. No other injuries were reported.
The American Red Cross is assisting the people displaced from the home.
A total of 41 firefighters responded. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Durham Fire Marshal's Office is leading the investigation in cooperation with the North Carolina Department of Insurance, the North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal, and the Durham Police Department.
