Protestors blast Trump's visit to North Carolina

GREENSBORO, North Carolina (WTVD) -- President Trump came to Greensboro Saturday evening to headline a special fundraiser in his honor. It was Trump's first visit to North Carolina since his inauguration.

The event was at the home of businessman Louis DeJoy - one of Trump's wealthiest benefactors and loyal supporters.

Tickets weren't cheap. Prices ranged from $2700 per ticket to $35,000 to co-host. The money will go towards supporting the president and the Republican National Committee.

However, a few blocks away there was another fundraiser party in protest.

"When we heard about the lavishness about Trump's fundraiser we wanted to create an alternative," said community organizer Gwen Frisbie-Fulton of Greensboro. She threw together a fundraiser in one day to help people in Puerto Rico devastated by Hurricane Maria.

She said it's the kind of fundraiser where the president's focus should be - not on raising an estimated two million dollars for the GOP.

"We're not going to raise but a couple thousand dollars, but what we are going to do is raise it with dignity and respect for the people that need it," said Frisbie-Fulton.

Closer to Trump's fundraiser was another group of protestors with various messages for the 45th president.

"I felt like I needed to be here because every day, every time you turn on the television, the president has said something crazy or in a tweet," said Jaime Brown.

In his latest tweet about his visit, President Trump said: "big progress being made on many fronts." But he did not elaborate further.

Security was tight around the high-end neighborhood off Country Club Road. Both the Guilford County Sheriff's Office and Greensboro police worked with the Secret Service to secure the area.
