Protest over HB2 forces closure of Franklin Street
CHAPEL HILL (WTVD) -- As many as 500 protesters flooded Franklin Street in Chapel Hill on Tuesday evening, forcing the road to be closed off as they chanted "Whose street?" our street" in a protest against HB2.
They even stopped city buses from being able to move. Some sat in the street, refusing to move.
There did not appear to be any confrontations with police officers, who stood by with watchful eyes.
No arrests were made.
This protest comes just one day after the town council here passed a resolution demanding the General Assembly repeal HB2, the bill that became law just last week. It blocks Charlotte's non-discrimination ordinance and bans local governments from passing their own anti-discrimination rules.

The big sticking point of that ordinance is the part that would have given transgendered people the right to use bathrooms and locker rooms of the gender they identify with, rather than their biological gender.
Critics say it's not safe to let men in a woman's bathroom.
Supporters say transgender people are the one who face the most danger in a bathroom.
By 10 p.m., a few people remained, but Franklin Street had reopened. With protests such as these however, it's evident the fight over House Bill 2 is far from over.
