FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- City leaders have responded to community concerns about staffing and safety at a therapeutic recreation center that caters to the special needs community in Fayetteville.
In a memo sent out late Friday, Michael Gibson, the city's director of Parks and Recreation, outlined data showing proper staffing for the Dorothy Gilmore Therapeutic Rec Center.
The statistics show the center is in compliance with the state law, and the director also assured city leaders that budgetary concerns were not at play regarding the center's operations.
Jamie Scruggins, the director of the Dorothy Gilmore Therapeutic Rec Center, recently submitted her resignation. Parents and volunteers said Scruggins told them she stepped down due to inadequate staffing, and, as a result, fear over liability issues.
Last week, parents and special needs advocates sounded off about their concerns following Scruggin's resignation.
Scruggins was immediately replaced, as were other staff members who moved on for personal reasons, according to Gibson.
