ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Rocky Mount High School senior was killed in a car crash Sunday.
It happened around 2:45 p.m. on U.S. Highway 64 east near mile marker 467.
Two vehicles were involved. Seventeen-year-old Tiara Hinton was in a 2005 Chevy Impala with three other people.
The three other passengers - all fellow Rocky Mount High School student athletes - were taken to Nash Healthcare Systems for minor injuries, but Hinton was pronounced dead at the scene.
No one was hurt in the second vehicle - a 2005 Toyota Tacoma.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. Police said speed was a contributing factor. They have not said who was driving the Impala.
Hinton was a member of the varsity volleyball, basketball, and track and field teams.
"Our hearts go out to the family," said Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Anthony Jackson.
Family members say a funeral service for Hinton will start at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rocky Mount High School.
