Duke Energy retires old boilers with a bang
The coal-fired boilers at the Sutton plant in Wilmington were imploded

WILMINGTON, NC (WTVD) -- Some Wilmington residents say the bang when Duke Energy imploded of one of three boilers at the L.V. Sutton Plant Sunday startled them and rattled their windows.

Video shows the rapid-fire explosions and the boiler falling to the ground in a cloud of dust.

Duke has replaced the old coal-fired boilers with new natural gas units which are cheaper to run, are more efficient, and produce less air pollution.

Duke still has two more boilers to implode. The next one is scheduled for May.
