Heavy rain leads to flood advisories in NC

RALEIGH

The National Weather Service issued flood advisories Sunday for Cumberland, Wayne, Stanly, Wake and Durham Counties because of heavy rain. All but Wake County's warning expired by late Sunday night, but forecasters issued a flash flood warning for that area until early Monday morning.

The weather service reported total weekend rainfall between about 5 to 6 inches in some areas north of Charlotte, near Albemarle and near New Bern.

Officials also reported penny-sized hail coming from a severe thunderstorm near Wendell, but the storm weakened as it moved northeast toward Rocky Mount.

Forecasters expects rain and storms to continue through Monday night.
