The SUV ran off the left side of the highway, struck a guardrail and flipped.
The SUV then came to rest on the guardrail.
The driver was taken to Duke University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The male passenger was taken to Duke for treatment of minor injuries. The names are not being released at this time.
