One dead in Raleigh shooting

RALEIGH Sheriff's officials say when they arrived at the home they found 29-year-old Benjamin Hamilton, he had been shot and was already dead.

The Wake County Sheriff says Hamilton's parents were home with him at the time of the shooting but what happened is still under investigation.

"Right now we're trying to put the pieces together to see what exactly did happen, "Sheriff Donnie Harrison said. "The mother and father are talking to us; it's just a tragedy something like this would happen."

Several neighbors who knew the parents tell Eyewitness News that they've never had any problems with the family. Neighbors didn't know a lot of about the son, who they say didn't spend much time at the home.

Benjamin Hamilton has a criminal history that includes auto theft and breaking and entering. He also had a protective order against him, which records obtained by Eyewitness news show he violated.

Sheriff Donnie Harrison says he doesn't know if the parents were the ones who got the protective order.

"There have been some problems in the family and of course we'll be looking at that also Hamilton's body will be taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy," Sheriff Harrison said. "Neighbors say they are trying to support the Hamilton's through this difficult time."

Sheriff's officials say the shooting is not a suicide and is being investigating as a homicide. They hope to have more information about the autopsy on Monday.
