Raleigh police investigate homicide

RALEIGH Raleigh police and relatives of Bernice Cobb, 46, a dispatcher for a Raleigh cab company, confirm she was killed at her on Sardis Drive late Friday night. Rachel Beatrice Williams, 33, was detained at the scene, and eventually charged with murder.

A family member tells Eyewitness News that Cobb had called to alert them that she was headed to hospital after her husband complained of chest pains. Cobb reportedly followed the ambulance. She'd promised to call when she returned home, but never did.

Officials say she was assaulted at her apartment at the Carolina Terrace Apartment complex in Southeast Raleigh.

Police have released few details, roping off two blocks while they continue to collect evidence at the scene. Neighbors say it's a quiet neighborhood but recently there've been break-ins and suspicious pedestrians travelling through the area. One resident tells ABC11 they've requested additional streetlights out of concern for their safety.

Cobb also worked as a part-time elder care nurse, according to relatives. Neighbors describe her as generous woman who often treated the children in the neighborhood to food and gifts.

"She was the kind of person who made sure no one went without a gift at Christmas," one relative recalled. "Why anyone would want to do this to her, I don't know."

Raleigh Police say their investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crimestoppers.
