Weldon man arrested for shooting at officer

WELDON, N.C. Michael Bernard Ponton, Sr., 51, of Weldon, is charged with attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, possession of a firearm by a felon, carrying a concealed gun, and felony possession of cocaine.

Sheriff's deputies were called in to help with the investigation at the request of Weldon Police Chief Mark Macon after the shooting scene was secured.

Ponton was arrested after a series of interviews was conducted.

He is being held under a $500,000 bond, and is due in court on January 12, 2011.
