NC gas tax to increase in July

RALEIGH

The increase means drivers will pay 2.5 cents more for every gallon purchased.

"I know North Carolina's really bad with their taxes on gas prices compared to other states," driver Tabitha Elmore said.

California and Washington are the only other states that charge more than an NC at the pump.

The state adjusts the tax every six months based on wholesale gas prices. Elmore says she can't complain as long as the state keeps using the money on roads.

"North Carolina's always had a reputation of having good highways, so I can't necessarily complain about that," she added.

Some state lawmakers wanted to put a cap on the tax but the proposal didn't make it out of committee in time. In the past, the General Assembly has put a cap on the state tax to stop it from rising.
